Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33 : VII + coda : Allegro vivo
Mstislav Rostropovich (cello), Herbert von Karajan and Berlin Philharmonic
I can’t tell you how many times I have listened to Rostropovich playing the finale of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations (this recording with Karajan and the Berlin Phil) and yet every single time I am still blown away even though I have listened to it for years. I have 17 recordings from different artists of this piece…but nobody plays it like he does. It is my belief that this cannot be topped and if every other recording in the world of this piece was lost in a massive war in the future and this one was the only one that survived, I think that would be ok.
