Anton von Webern was shot to death? It's true.
During WWII, Webern and his family relocated to Salzburg after the Allies invaded, hoping to find a safer life for his family. One night, not wanting to disturb his sleeping grandchildren (as they were all he had left, since his only son was killed earlier that year), he went outside to smoke a cigar…breaking curfew. He was shot and killed by american soldier Pfc Raymond Norwood Bell in 1945. The guilt and shame Bell felt led him to a life of drinking and he died of alcoholism 10 years later. Talk about sad.
