When he was 16, Mahler began (but never finished) his Piano Trio in A minor. It is his sole piece of chamber music he wrote that still exists, though there were several other supposed works…an award winning piano suite…fragments of a scherzo in g minor for quartet. It certainly makes one wish he wrote more in this genre.
Only the first movement exists and actually was Mahler’s first publicly performed piece…but was rumored to be rejected by publishers and thus left unfinished. Thankfully…this movement is still around…and chamber music fanatics can fantasize what would have been. enjoy.
