…that the premiere of Mozart’s 20th piano concerto was in a casino?!?!? It’s first performance on February 11th, 1785 was in the Mehlgrube Casino in Vienna, Austria, with Mozart as the pianist.
note: its not a casino as we would today imagine ie. Its was nothing like vegas. Originally a flour wearhouse, the building was torn down and rebuilt in 1726 as a high-end public establishment to host masked balls and receptions for the upper class. In 1781 one of the ballrooms of the Mehlgrube was converted into a concert hall which is where the piece premiered 4 years later. For more musical triva, after the building is reopened in 1798 as an inn, the owner brings back past tradition and continues to host concerts in the building…which was where Beethoven conducted frequently from 1798 to 1813. In 1898 it becomes the Ambassador Hotel, which it still is today. Make sure to visit when you’re in Vienna!
